Inspired reading

Over my 30+ years I have been inspired by many a book in my time, I would like to share these with you as a starter for ten.

(I am not affiliated with any of these authors or publishers)

  • The Scottish Enlightenment

The author is an American professor of German extraction, so no axe to grind. This is a gripping and intriguing history of how Scotland produced the institutions, inventions, science, disciplines (“-ologies”) and beliefs that made the most powerful culture in the world.

  • 18 Platoon

Description A young bank manager with no previous military experience was sent, after minimal training, to command a platoon of infantry soldiers just after the 1944 D-Day landings. We read this book at RMA Sandhurst: it is filled with remarkable concern, compassion and care in the way he led his troops all the way, on foot, to the German surrender in 1945 without losing one yard of ground. A great lesson for all leaders in the power of positive culture.goes here

  • Finding the mother tree

What I loved about this book is that it’s biology as detective work, bravely undertaken in the face of corporate disdain. No one has done more to transform our understanding of trees than the world-renowned scientist Suzanne Simard. Now she shares the secrets of a lifetime spent uncovering startling truths about trees: their cooperation, healing capacity, memory, wisdom and sentience.

  • Landlines

The end of this highly original, moving and often very funny recording of an unplanned thousand-mile journey down the length of the island of Great Britain will bring tears to your eyes, but in a heart-warming and uplifting way. Once again bloody-mindedness and a never-say-die spirit come to the fore.

  • Otherlands: A world in the making

This is a genius construction of an encyclopaedic and epic recording of life on Earth, starting today with the man-made Anthropocene then taking a journey back through the aeons of the past as we've never seen it before, each chapter focusing on an exemplar location where vital changes were taking place. Otherlands is an exhilarating journey into deep time, showing us the Earth as it used to exist, and the worlds that were here before ours.

  • Moderate becoming good later

Courage, imagination, tenacity and sheer will power come to the fore in this exhilarating and deeply moving story of one man's attempt to sea kayak the areas of the Shipping Forecast and the love of his sister in telling the tale as well as finishing the voyage.

  • A life on our planet

The statistics about the global changes in our population, climate and biodiversity during David Attenborough’s life are breathtaking in their starkness and great lesson to us all and yet he remains hopeful of a turnaround. As he says: “A Life on Our Planet contains my witness statement and my vision for the future - the story of how we came to make this, our greatest mistake, and how, if we act now, we can yet put it right.”

  • Sixty Degrees North

The openness and honesty with which this book is written really stands out. The interactions between humanity, community and the wild places on our planet sit at the core of this fascinating and moving journey. 'Sixty Degrees North is a story that we tell, both to ourselves and to others. It is a story about where - and perhaps also who - we are.'

  • The ship beneath the ice

An amazing true story of innovation and persistence in the face of serious adversity and how conviction in your cause can bring success in the face of extreme odds: a great lesson for all leaders. Over one hundred years after its wreck, Endurance, Sir Ernest Shackleton's ship, was found in the depths of the most hostile sea on Earth. The Ship Beneath the Ice is the astonishing story of the ship and its discovery, told by Mensun Bound, the Director of Exploration on the Endurance22 Expedition.
